About the Speaker
Dr.Kathleen A.Quill
Dr.Kathleen Quill is respected internationally as an author,
lecturer,and consultant on educating children with autism spectrum
disorders (ASD).Quill has conducted trainings in over 20 countries,
given the keynote address for 10 international organizations,
and presented at over 100 conferences. She promotes integrating
behavioral and developmentalmethods. She conducts applied research
on language, communication,and social intervention and has taught
at University of Massachusetts, Lesley College, and Emerson College.
She has authored numerous publications, is the editor of the popular
book Teaching children with autism: Strategies to enhance communication
and socialization, author of the bestseller DO-WATCH-LISTEN-SAY:
Social and communication intervention for children with autism,
author of e-learning courses on www.autisminternetmodules.com,
and was a major contributor to the development of AutismPro,
an online software tool that provides comprehensive information
and guidance about the full range of evidencebased educational
interventions for young children with ASD (www.autismpro.com).
Quill is on the editorial board for the Journal of Autism
and Developmental Disorders and Focus on Autism and Other
Developmental Disabilities, the advisory board for the Autism
Spectrum Quarterly, the board of directors for Autism Asperger
Publishing Company, and is the director of the professional advisory
board of AutismPro.

Social and Communication Interventions for Students with Moderate
to Severe Autism

The ultimate success of an education and treatment program for
students with autism spectrum disorders is one that maximizes
the development of their social-communication skills.This conference
addresses the critical role of the speech-language pathologist
(SLP), special educator, general educator, parent, and the entire
educational team in the treatment of these skills.
Topics include:
- The role of the SLP and other team members in developing and
increasing communication in school, home, and community.
- Informal communication and augmentative and alternate communication
assessment.
- Planning interventions for non-speaking students and those
with emerging speech.
- Key instructional strategies to enhance emergent speech and
functional communication.
The workshop includes lecture, video, and discussion.The handout
packet includes tools and tips that educational professionals
and families can use immediately.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Participants will learn the reason to use a transdisciplinary
model of intervention for students with significant communication
challenges.
- Participants will learn to complete and translate the data
from the Do-Watch-Listen-Say (DWLS) Communication Assessment
tool into specific instructional objectives.
- Participants will learn how to select communication supports
to facilitate a students acquisition of target communication
objectives in school,home, and community.
- Participants will learn how to support team and family membersability
to implement target communication objectives across environments.
- Participants will learn how to use behavioral strategies
in natural settings to promote functional communication.
